Old Master to Modern British Flip Catalogue

 

Our Old Master to Modern British sale took place on 10 September

This sale offers a broad selection of fine paintings and one exceptional bronze. Five hundred years of artistic endeavour represented in print, watercolour, oil paint and other media.

Highlights include a small but beautiful oil sketch by Sir Alfred Munnings depicting Exmoor ponies (lot 113). Munnings produced a number of these en plein air works but chose this one as an illustration for his autobiography.

Cyril Power is a name that has provoked attention for many years. Lot 90 ‘Divertissement’ is a classic example of his dynamic linocuts, always depicting energetic motion with images that resonate with the Art Deco movement.

Edward Seago is another ‘big name’, here we have two works, a large oil of Istanbul and a colourful watercolour of a canal in Amsterdam (lots 143-144).

There’s plenty on offer with less extravagant estimates from the quirky Kenneth Rowntree (lot 137) oil portrait of ‘Mr Davy, Builder and Decorator’ standing in his yard to a selection of Eric Gill engravings (lots 95-99).

SOLD for £500 + fees

 

Finally the bronze – a wonderful example by Dame Elizabeth Frink (lot 145) acquired directly from the artist with a letter from Elizabeth to the purchaser. Perfect provenance.
